Rectangular counterstamp 'Shams' on Byzantine anonymous follis host.

Byzantine host.

C/M: Lowick MH 9; Album 1952; Host: SB Anyonymous Class K 1901 on Class J 1900

VF. Brown patina with some rust typical of the hoard. Nicely centered stamp. Counterstamp VF, host Good. Mild porosity and rough adhesions. Includes ticket citing that this coin is ex. Mardin Hoard.

'Shams' is an honorific title that doesn't refer to any single person, but Lowick suggests that this countermark was applied by Shams al-Muluk Jamal al-Din Mahmud, during the short Inalid rule of Amid (modern-day Diyarbakir, Turkey). Album lists the 'Shams' mark as 'Rare.' This example is struck on a Byzantine anonymous follis attributed to the reign of Alexius, 1081-1118 A.D., itself overstruck on an earlier anonymous follis of Alexius. The Mardin Hoard contained 361 coins with this counterstamp.

The Mardin Hoard was a large group of copper coins found before 1972 in the vacinity of Mardin in modern-day southeastern Turkey. The hoard consisted of at least 13,500 pieces, including around 2,200 Byzantine folles countermarked by local Islamic rulers, as reported by N. M. Lowick, author of 'The Mardin Hoard,' a 1977 book published to document the countermarks found on the coins. The hoard was important in further understanding patterns of circulation and countermarking of Byzantine coins still being used in lands recently claimed by Islamic rulers. Most examples are heavily worn from circulation and many are countermarked several times, some on top of each other.

Anatolian Beyliks Isfendiyarids (Candarids) Suleyman II AH787-794 (1385-1392 A.D.) Akce VF -- #AC86518

AR Akce 15mm. 1.00g.

Kalima in three lines within square.

Legend in three lines within square.

Album 1284.4

VF. Lightly toned with some lustre in devices. Typical crude manufacture and uneven strike. Undated, but likely struck under Isfendiyar, AH794-843 (1392-1439 A.D.).

Album notes that this type - which typically exhibits crude calligraphy, low weight, and poor strike, as in this example - was likely struck in Suleyman's name after his death, during the reign of Isfendiyar. This is corroborated by the low weight, which corresponds to the reduction in weight of silver coins struck during Isfendiyar's reign.

Timurid Herat Sultan Husayn Abu'l-Ghazi, 3rd reign AH873-911 (1469-1506 A.D.) Tanka EF -- #AC87353

AR Tanka 19mm. 5.00g. No mint (host coin Firuzkuh mint) No date

Eye-shaped counterstamp 'behbud' on Qara Qoyunlu tanka host.

Qara Qoyunlu host reverse with Kalima and Rashidun.

C/M: Album 2437; Host: Album 2493

EF. Nicely toned. Lustrous counterstamp. Counterstamp EF, host VF. Attractive. Host slightly off center. A few light marks. This counterstamp of Husayn Abu'l-Ghazi is rather common, but is well applied on this example. The host is a tanka of Jahanshah of the Qara Qoyunlu, struck at Firuzkuh, and is of excellent style. We found no other examples with the mint name in a central four-pointed star, seemingly rare, thus.
