Galeria Valeria, wife of Galerius 308-311 A.D. Follis Fine -- #AC91683
AE Follis 26mm. 3.40g. Heraclea Mint 311 A.D. Diademed and draped bust, r. GAL VALERIA AVG Venus standing facing, head l., r. holding up apple, l. raising drapery over shoulder; star in l. field, crescent in r.; In ex.: HT(gamma) VENERI V-ICTRICI cf. RIC VI 63 Fine. Unusual weight, not listed in RIC. We could not find another example. Brown patina. Old dent on bust. Small ancient bend on edge, resulting in flan splits. Unlisted in RIC. This example is of an unusually light weight; folles of this weight standard were not struck at Heraclea until 312 A.D., a year after the death of Galerius. A new 3.5g-4.5g follis weight standard was introduced by Licinius, Maximinus, and Constantine in 311-312, but these control marks were only used at Heraclea in 311 while the new weight standard wasn't put into use there until 312, according to RIC.
