Gallienus 253-268 A.D. Antoninianus VF -- #AC98328
AE Antoninianus 21mm. 3.10g. Rome Mint 267-268 A.D. Radiate head, r. GALLIENVS AVG Centaur walking r., drawing bow; In ex.: Z APOLLINI CONS AVG RIC V 163 VF. Dark brown patina. Some porosity, as typical. Some unevenness. Part of Gallienus' 'zoo series.' Officina 7 (zeta) struck coins featuring a centaur and was dedicated to Apollo. The coins referred to as the 'zoo series' of Gallienus invoke the gods for the 'preservation of the emperor' (conservatori augustus). Each officina struck a different reverse type, naming a different god and depicting one of that god's represenative animals or mythical beasts; a doe for Diana and a hippocamp for Neptune, for example. While it has been thought that this series was struck to commemorate religious festivals, their issuance during the final years of Gallienus' troubled reign likely reveals that they were indeed struck as a public appeal to the gods for protection in the face of plagues, invasions, and rebellions that challenged the Empire.

AE Antoninianus 21mm. 2.30g. Rome or Siscia mint 265-267 A.D. Radiate head r. GALLIENVS AVG Fortuna standing l., holding cornucopiae and rudder; (sigma) in r. field. FORTVNA REDVX cf. RIC V 193 (sigma placement and bust type) or RIC V 572 VF. Dark glossy brown patina. Struck with worn dies. A type with an S in the reverse field is listed in RIC as an issue of Siscia (RIC 572), but this example features the word-final form of lower-case sigma, which was used at Rome. However, RIC lists the letter in exergue only (RIC 193) and with a different bust type. The style of this coin is a better fit for Rome, so we feel it is a Roman issue and the RIC entry is incomplete.
