The ancilia were the shields of Mars and were associated with the Salii, or 'leaping priests,' a college of priests whose ceremonies signaled the beginning and ending of the military campaign season.

This type commemorates the victories of Marcus Aurelius over the Germanic tribes on the Danube in the 170s.
