Judaea Ascalon Trajan 98-117 A.D. AE25 Good Fine -- #AC88603
AE25 25mm. 13.50g. CY 220 (116/7 A.D.) Laureate head, r. CEB[ACTOS] Tyche standing l. on galley, holding sceptre and aphlaston; altar to l., dove to r. over KC (date). [ACKALO] SNG ANS 712 var. (date) Good Fine. Scarce. Dark brown patina. Mild roughness and adhesions. This type can only be differentiated from Hadrian's identical issues by date. However, the city date is based on the first year of Ascalon's independence from Seleukid rule, which is generally accepted to be 104 B.C. but is not known for certain. As a result, coins of this date are occasionally interpreted as a very early issue of Hadrian, theoretically only differentiated by portrait style. For our example, we defer to SNG ANS, who places the 'KC' date firmly in Trajan's rule.

Judaea Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem) Diadumenian 217-218 A.D. AE22 VF -- #AC105818
AE22 22mm. 8.51g. Radiate head r. M OP [DIADVMEN]IAN CAE Draped bust of Serapis r., wearing modius. CO[L AEL] KAP COM[M P F] RPC V.3 online 1638 var. (reverse legend); cf. Meshorer 107 VF. Rare. Dark green-brown patina with some tan fill. Some mild roughness and reddish adhesions. An interesting example with an obverse die very similar to those used at Caesarea Maritima; we could find no other examples of this bust style from Aelia Capitolina. The reverse legend is also unusual: instead of the typical CAP, it appears to read KAP, with the A upside down. We could find no other examples. Hadrian founded Aelia Capitolina on the ruins of Jerusalem, dedicating the new city to Jupiter.

Judaea Caesarea Paneas Diva Poppaea (wife of Nero) & Diva Claudia (daughter of Nero) died 65 A.D. & 63 A.D. AE19 (3 Units) VF -- #AC103719
AE19 (3 Units) 19mm. 5.13g. Caesarea Panias (Caesarea Philippi) mint 65-68 A.D. Temple with two columns, enclosing seated figure of Poppaea, l. DIVA POPPAEA AVG Temple with six columns, enclosing standing figure of Claudia (daughter of Nero and Poppaea). DIVA CLAVD NER F RPC I 4846 VF. Brass-brown patina. Some good detail despite issues. Rough and pitted. Once cleaned, now repatinating. This coin honors both Nero's second wife, Poppaea Sabina, and their daughter, Claudia. Poppaea gave birth to Claudia in January 63 A.D., but Claudia lived only four months. Poppaea later died in 65 A.D., perhaps during childbirth or, as has long been believed, after being attacked by Nero. This is the only coinage issued in the name of Nero's daughter.
