VF. Lightly toned with some hints of lustre. Porous. While it is difficult to determine what is between the eagle's legs, we feel that the murex shell is likely. Regardless, this is undoubtedly a Phoenician issue because of the distinctive style of the eagle's feathers.

[ACKALO]

SNG ANS 712 var. (date)

Good Fine. Scarce. Dark brown patina. Mild roughness and adhesions. This type can only be differentiated from Hadrian's identical issues by date. However, the city date is based on the first year of Ascalon's independence from Seleukid rule, which is generally accepted to be 104 B.C. but is not known for certain. As a result, coins of this date are occasionally interpreted as a very early issue of Hadrian, theoretically only differentiated by portrait style. For our example, we defer to SNG ANS, who places the 'KC' date firmly in Trajan's rule.
