SC 708b VF. Scarce with the ‘EU’ monogram. Dark green patina with some tan fill. Very light roughness. This mint, identified by its distinct DEL control mark, is closely associated with Antioch’s primary mint. It may have been opened nearby in response to Ptolemy III’s invasion in 246 B.C., and remained in operation through Seleucus II’s reign.

The unusual style and fabric, combined with worn dies and imperfect die axis, seem to indicate this was an inexperienced mint, possibly opened in an emergency. Our reading of the monogram is necessarily tentative.

Nabataean culture centered at the city of Petra (Arabia Patraea) in modern day Jordan, well-known for its temples carved into rock faces. This kingdom remained autonomous until the period of Domitian.
