Zangids al-Mawsil (Mosul) Qutb al-Din Maudud or Sayf al-Din Ghazi II AH544-576 (1149-1180 A.D.) Follis VF -- #AC87320

AE Follis 30mm. 6.80g. al-Jazirah mint

Rectangular counterstamp 'Atabeg' on Byzantine anonymous follis host.

Byzantine host.

C/M: Lowick MH 1; Album 1947; Host: SB Anonymous Class D 1836

VF. Brown patina with some rusty spots, typical of the hoard. Counterstamp about VF, host Good. Mild porosity and rough adhesions. Includes ticket citing that this coin is ex. Mardin Hoard.

Though the 'Atabeg' counterstamp on this coin can't be attributed to a single ruler, Lowick narrows it down to two possibilities, struck upon the retaking of al-Jazirah from Izz al-Din. This example is struck on a Byzantine anonymous follis attributed to the reign of Constantine IX, 1042-1055 A.D. This countermark was present on 231 coins in the Mardin Hoard, often on coins bearing Izz al-Din's counterstamps.

The Mardin Hoard was a large group of copper coins found before 1972 in the vacinity of Mardin in modern-day southeastern Turkey. The hoard consisted of at least 13,500 pieces, including around 2,200 Byzantine folles countermarked by local Islamic rulers, as reported by N. M. Lowick, author of 'The Mardin Hoard,' a 1977 book published to document the countermarks found on the coins. The hoard was important in further understanding patterns of circulation and countermarking of Byzantine coins still being used in lands recently claimed by Islamic rulers. Most examples are heavily worn from circulation and many are countermarked several times, some on top of each other.

Zangids al-Mawsil (Mosul) Qutb al-Din Maudud or Sayf al-Din Ghazi II AH544-576 (1149-1180 A.D.) Follis VF -- #AC87317

AE Follis 27mm. 4.60g. al-Jazirah mint

Rectangular counterstamp 'Atabeg' and round counterstamp 'Izz' on Byzantine anonymous follis host.

Rectangular counterstamp 'adl' Izz' on Byzantine host.

C/M: Lowick MH 1 and 12 and 13; Album 1947 and 1954 and 1955; Host: SB Anonymous Class G 1867

VF. Brown patina with some rusty spots. Counterstamps about VF, host Good. Mild porosity and rough adhesions. Countermark 1 'Atabeg' unevenly applied. Though there is no confirming documentation accompanying the coin, its patina suggests it may be from the Mardin Hoard.

This example features three counterstamps. 'Izz' and 'adl' Izz' are both attributed to Izz al-Din, governor of al-Jazirah appointed by Sayf al-Din Ghazi I of al-Mawsil (Mosul). Izz al-Din revolted upon Ghazi's death and took al-Jazirah as independent ruler, a period during which he presumably countermarked circulating coins in his name. After his death, the Zangids of al-Mawsil reclaimed al-Jazirah, and the anonymous 'Atabeg' counterstamp is subsequently found applied to Izz al-Din's coins. This example is struck on a Byzantine anonymous follis attributed to the reign of Romanus IV, 1068-1071 A.D. These three countermarks commonly occur together.

Album lists the 'Shams' mark as 'Rare.' This example is struck on a Byzantine follis of Nicephorus III, 1078-1081 A.D., itself overstruck on an anonymous Class H follis.

Anatolian Beyliks Isfendiyarids (Candarids) Suleyman II AH787-794 (1385-1392 A.D.) Akce VF -- #AC86518

AR Akce 15mm. 1.00g.

Kalima in three lines within square.

Legend in three lines within square.

Album 1284.4

VF. Lightly toned with some lustre in devices. Typical crude manufacture and uneven strike. Undated, but likely struck under Isfendiyar, AH794-843 (1392-1439 A.D.).

Album notes that this type - which typically exhibits crude calligraphy, low weight, and poor strike, as in this example - was likely struck in Suleyman's name after his death, during the reign of Isfendiyar. This is corroborated by the low weight, which corresponds to the reduction in weight of silver coins struck during Isfendiyar's reign.

Eye-shaped counterstamp 'behbud' on Qara Qoyunlu tanka host.

Qara Qoyunlu host reverse with Kalima and Rashidun.

C/M: Album 2437; Host: Album 2493

EF. Nicely toned. Lustrous counterstamp. Counterstamp EF, host VF. Attractive. Host slightly off center. A few light marks. This counterstamp of Husayn Abu'l-Ghazi is rather common, but is well applied on this example. The host is a tanka of Jahanshah of the Qara Qoyunlu, struck at Firuzkuh, and is of excellent style. We found no other examples with the mint name in a central four-pointed star, seemingly rare, thus.
