INDIAN STATES: Bahawalpur AH 1342 or 1343 (1923-1925) AE Paisa AU/UNC -- #BU54481
Obv.: Toughra (Prince's personal signature) / Rev.: Persian inscription; three branches and four stars above.Approx 16mm wide and 2.5g. KM Y-8. Bahawalpur is situated in the area that is known as the 'Crossroads of Asia', which was hotly contested by ancient conquerors. At one time, it was a part of Afghanistan. In the 19th and 20th Centuries it became an Indian Princely State. It remained as such until 1947 when the new nation of Pakistan was formed. Bahawalpur became the main princely state to be ceded to Pakistan. This unusual coin from a location that few American collectors have ever heard of features one of the last uses of the ornate 'Toughra' style royal signature, developed during the Ottoman Empire. Krause lists XF examples at $15, with no values cited for UNC. We are fortunate to be able to offer select AU/UNC examples of this intriguing piece missing from many world coin collections.
