GUATEMALA: Republic 1896 1/4 Real in Choice BU -- #BU54482

This lovely little coin (11mm. 0.75g.) features the radiant sun shining over a mountain range and erupting volcano. This design echoes the classic coin types issued by the Central American Republic (later the Central American Union), issued 1825-1848, and of which Guatemala was a member state. Students of monetary history will note that most Latin American nations were shifting away from the use of 'Reales' or 'Royals' and toward Pesos and Centavos by the 1860's or 1870's.However, Guatemala and El Salvador struck limited issues of small coins denominated in reales into the early 20th Century. This is because in rural areas, the local economies were still based upon the old Spanish system of Reales and Escudos (which is mirrored in hacienda and cafetal tokens). At the time, the largely native population was still spending cobs and other antique coins, sometimes over 200 years old.

The Guatemalan 1/4 Real presents an interesting opportunity for the date & type collector. This basic design was struck from 1872-1901, but with a dozen types (major varieties) produced. Some of these varieties are fairly rare, with up to 4 different being struck in one year! Nevertheless, the catalog value of the rarest date in UNC is a mere $90! Although the scarcest coins may occasionally sell for hundreds of dollars per example, the entire set can be assembled for a very modest price if one has patience. (A collector looking for a true challenge can push the Guatemala Quartillos collection back into the 1700's, and included the issues of the Central American Republic- which resemble the coin above).

INDIAN STATES: Bahawalpur AH 1342 or 1343 (1923-1925) AE Paisa AU/UNC -- #BU54481

Obv.: Toughra (Prince's personal signature) / Rev.: Persian inscription; three branches and four stars above.Approx 16mm wide and 2.5g.KM Y-8.

Bahawalpur is situated in the area that is known as the "Crossroads of Asia", which was hotly contested by ancient conquerors. At one time, it was a part of Afghanistan. In the 19th and 20th Centuries it became an Indian Princely State. It remained as such until 1947 when the new nation of Pakistan was formed.Bahawalpur became the main princely state to be ceded to Pakistan. This unusual coin from a location that few American collectors have ever heard of features one of the last uses of the ornate 'Toughra' style royal signature, developed during the Ottoman Empire.

Krause lists XF examples at $15, with no values cited for UNC.We are fortunate to be able to offer select AU/UNC examples of this intriguing piece missing from many world coin collections.
