AUSTRALIA Uncertain convict Western Australia? Uncertain Penal Colony Circa 1849-1868, perhaps earlier -- #EX49796

AE Convict Token 30mm. 10.70g.

Black swan swimming left.

Charles Roe bust Conder Token of Macclesfield, Cheshire (1790 or 1791).

VF. Engraving on a low grade host coin, very typical of a 'convict token.' Host coin is perhaps good. Pierced for suspension. The link to Australia would seem more tenuous but for the fact that the black swan swimming left is the heraldic device for the Colony of Western Australia, founded in 1829. This bird was commonly sighted off the coast of Australia, observed by early explorers and colonists. The penal era began in 1849 in Western Australia, later than on the east coast.
