AR Denarius 17mm. 3.30g. Gaul (Vienna?) Mint c. 68 A.D. Helmeted and draped bust of Mars, r. MARS VLTOR Aquila and altar between two standards, P-R to either side; In ex.: SIGNA
RIC I 51 VF. Very rare. Toned. Hints of lustre in reverse devices. Some light porosity. Old scratches on obverse. Very rare Civil War issue. It is agreed that this issue was struck by C. Julius Vindex, governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, during his open revolt against Nero. Not struck in Lugdunum, which refused to join his cause to overthrow Nero, this type was instead likely struck in Vienna to pay Vindex's army, which he claimed consisted of 100,000 men. ex. K (retrograde) :SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDICTV. Duplessy 1190; Lafaurie 1037 Near EF. Deeply toned. Rare variety with date at shoulder of bust. Envelope reads 'Bought in Paris April 1954' Henri III died in 1589.
