Macedon Amphipolis The Macedonians after 168 B.C. AE20 Good Fine -- #AC97394
AE20 20mm. 5.40g. Head of Strymon r., wreathed with reeds.
Trident ornamented with dolphins. MAKE/DONWN HGC 3.1, 334 Good Fine. Green patina with some glossiness. A bit softly struck. ex. Alex G. Malloy with has tag stating this is an issue of the Danubian Celts in the Serdi region, 'found in 1997.' Without more contextual information accompanying the coin, we are tentative of this assessment. Alex Malloy believed this to be an issue of the Danubian Celts in the Serdi region of Thrace. The Serdi Celts imitated Macedonian issues, especially the Strymon/Trident type, but were usually made from crude, imitative dies and overstruck on official issues. This coin exhibits a fine obverse style, and there appears to be no evidence of overstriking. However, the trident appears crudely rendered, it is a bit lightweight, and the overall strike is poor. We believe it to be an official issue, but with further research it could be found to be a Celtic imitation. Worthy of further study; see Mac Gonagle 'Celtic Strymon/Trident Coinage,' 2014.
