We could find only three similar examples sold (differing monograms); this portrait is superior to those examples. Listed as rarity 'R2' in HGC; estimated to be fewer than 10 extant examples. This coin is absent from SNG Black Sea, and even Hoover had to re-use Waddington's photo from 1908 when writing HGC 7.

Fine. Very rare. Dark brown patina with earthen fill. Flan flaw. Some faint cleaning marks and porosity. A very rare civic issue of curiously crude style. There are two distinct styles of this type; RPC 3849 is of higher weight and much finer style, while this variety (RPC 3850) is lighter, poorly produced, and of very crude style. RPC suggest that this variety is quite possibly a local imitation.
